Rebels in Revolting Academia

in Missouri, where Rep. Jane Cunningham introduced a bill that will surely unnerve many of her state's higher education bureaucrats...Ms. Cunningham's bill is aimed straight at the ideological orthodoxy that holds sway on American college campuses. It would require that Missouri's state-funded colleges and universities announce each year what they have done institutionally "to ensure and promote intellectual diversity and academic freedom." A bill similar to Ms. Cunningham's has also been introduced in Virginia....'The Revolt Against Academia', Andrew Ferguson, The NY Sun, 2/7/2007

I feel David Horowitz's footsteps in this story. Congratulations to Front Page Magazine's publisher on spreading the word and enacting the laws!

Problem is that each annual announcement would probably consist of a blank sheet of paper with nothing on it, which would be an accurate assessment of the past year's excursions into intellectual diversity on virtually any American campus. But at least this proposal is a start. Let's see if it passes. With some teeth in it!

You somewhat misunderestimate the complications in this process. Perhaps you have been out of academia too long. The first thing that will happen will be the formation of seven committees to study the etymology of "diversity" and "intellectual." Results will be compared in 18 months. Then, they will be collated into a single report, which should take a year. After that, a President's Committee on Intellectual Diversity as Defined In the Etymological Study Conducted By the 14 Committeees...etc. will be formed, which will study the issue for five years. After a report is issued, there will be an announcement that the issue is moot until the courts agree with the consensus on the meaning and etymology of "diversity" and "intellectual."
