Political Math in New York City Schools

THERE'S a fifth column in New York City's public schools - radical teachers who openly undermine Schools Chancellor Joel Klein's curriculum mandates and use their classrooms to indoctrinate students in left-wing, anti-American ideology...One center for this movement is El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice in Brooklyn, the city's first "social justice" high school. The school's lead math teacher, Jonathan Osler, is using El Puente as a base from which to organize a three-day conference in April on "Math Education and Social Justice."...Osler offers this urgent reason for the conference: "The systemic and structural oppression of low income and people of color continues to worsen. The number of people in prison continues to grow, as does our unemployment rate . . . However, in math classes around the country, perhaps the best places to study many of these issues, we continue to use curricula and models that lack any real-world - let alone socially relevant - contexts."...'Math and Marxism: NYC's Wack Job Teachers,' Sol Stern, The NY Post 3/21/2007

Kudos to The NY Post and Sol Stern for blowing the whistle -- finally! -- on the subversion of secondary public education. As bad as it is in colleges and universities, it begins in the public schools, which may be in greater need of David Horowitz's campaign for intellectual diversity than any college campus.

One would think any sane person should wonder why math has to have socio-political "relevance" in the first place. To bad sanity is in such short supply these days!

Real world math for future prisoners: If Bad *** Jones buys three dime bags from Dirty Dog Smith for $300, and then recuts them into four dime bags ....

Reach Upward, your example is not far from the way things are done.

The Interface -- math underpins science, a keystone in modern free societies. It shouldn't be surprising that this kind of attack would happen there.
