Pre-Election Prognostications

The always-interesting TCS Daily has a pretty diverse rundown of election predictions from its frequent prognosticators. Here's a good one from:
FREDERICK TURNER, Author of The Culture of Hope and Natural Religion

I think the Republicans will squeak by with small losses in both houses, mainly because "better the devil that we know" and "it's the economy [which is in good shape], stupid". Whatever the outcome, there will be gridlock, which is usually good for the nation. Politically speaking, victory would be a tar-baby for either party in the present atmosphere, as the gains the nation is making will be invisible while its tasks and image will be rather dispiriting for some time yet.
After this year's Republican spending spree, gridlock may be a good thing, but only as long as it's not being led by Nancy Pelosi!

BTW, Fred, careful when you're using the "tar baby" metaphor. It could get you in trouble with the PC Police. Masachusetts Governor Mitt Romney knows this. Archive fans can check out Wonk's previous riff on this story and other PC Police language manipulation here.
